What is Hydrocephalus?

Hydrocephalus means excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has accumulated inside the brain's ventricles, creating dangerous pressure. In infants, you may notice the head growing too fast, a bulging soft spot, or downward-gazing eyes ("sunset sign").

What is a VP Shunt?

A ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is a thin silicone tube system with a small valve. One end is placed inside the brain ventricle. The tube runs under the skin (usually along the neck and chest) to the abdomen, where excess CSF drains and is absorbed by the body.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

The surgery takes 45–90 minutes under general anesthesia. Dr. Waqas makes two small incisions — one on the head and one on the abdomen. The child is usually in hospital 2–4 days. Most families see improvement within 24–48 hours.

VP Shunt Complications — What to Watch For

VP shunts are reliable but can occasionally fail due to blockage (obstruction) or infection. Signs of shunt failure: return of original symptoms, bulging fontanelle (in infants), severe headache, fever and redness along the shunt tract. Call immediately if you notice these.
